Community Foundation- How to Apply for a Student Award


To fulfill donor wishes, applicants must have resided and attended school in the Columbia Valley for a minimum of 5 years. Applicants must be between 17-35 years of age during year of application.


Applicants are eligible to obtain a maximum of 2 student awards. (Does not have to be in subsequent years.)


Approval of repeat applicants is dependent on funds available at the time of granting; preference may be given to first time applicants.


Internships are eligible if the applicant is registered as a student through a post-secondary institution and schooling costs are incurred.

Additional Requirements

Applies to Alan J. Witherspoon Memorial Fine Arts Fund

  • The applicant is pursuing education in at least one of the following disciplines: Painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking and wood carving, architecture, music, poetry, photography, video production/editing, design, sequential art, conceptual art and printmaking.
  • Applicants will need to demonstrate financial need.


Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted. All fields must be completed. Applications received more than 7 days in advance of the deadline will be reviewed for errors or omissions.


Student Award application and Letter of Reference (including completed Letter of Reference title page) to be submitted together.


Emailed applications will only be accepted in Portable Document Format .pdf


The inclusion of a cover letter is strongly encouraged. The Foundation reserves the right to request additional information from applicants.

Applicants are required to submit two (2) images of their present work.

Letter of Reference

Reference letters are required for the Arnold Ellis Scholarship Fund, the Bidder Bursary Award and the Erwin Kloos Memorial Fund

Applications to be accompanied by one Letter of Reference.


Letters of Reference to be on letterhead (where applicable), to include referee contact information and must be signed by referee.


Applicants to provide referee with Letter of Reference title page. Repeat applicants to supply a different Letter of Reference than on their first application and it must be from a different referee.


Letters of Reference from relatives are inadmissible.

Successful Applicants

Successful applicants must submit a Verification of Enrolment (letter from Registrar) from their post-secondary institution outlining details for award providers.  Whenever possible, student awards will be sent directly to the post-secondary institution. If the student award is paid directly to the student, receipts equal to, or greater than, the student award must be provided. If receipts are for a lesser amount, the award will be reduced accordingly.


Successful applicants are required to notify the Foundation of any changes to their education plan that may impact their eligibility for this award. If no longer eligible for an award, inform the Foundation as soon as possible. (For example, you are not accepted or withdraw from a program.) The award is not transferrable to other programs or time frames.

Approval Process

Applications are adjudicated in early June and applicants are notified of the outcome of their application on or before June 15th. The award covers expenses incurred in the period from May 16 (current year) through to May 15 (next year).
